Caresfield is pleased to support the Minnesota Alliance for Patience Safety (MAPS) as part of the Caresfield Cares program. MAPS helps align the patient safety community around shared language and goals, bridges gaps between care silos and strengthens relations between patients and their care teams. As a strategic partner, Caresfield will help the organization achieve its goal, “Safe Care. Everywhere.”

Caresfield Vice President of Sales and Marketing Stefanie Bosshart shared how a similar passion for patient safety brought the organizations together. “Caresfield’s products play an important role in positive patient outcomes,” Bosshart said. “If a label falls off a sample, you could have anything from redrawing the sample to a misdiagnosis. When clinicians use the wrong size tourniquet, you could see anything from multiple attempts to draw blood to loss of a limb. We are very passionate about patient safety and are pleased to work with MAPS.”
Using Patient Stories to Promote Patient Safety
Caresfield will work with Lisa Juliar, MAPS director of patient and family engagement, as part of the partnership. Together, we aim to raise awareness about patient safety issues.
“We’ve found that about 99 percent of people affected by a patient safety issue want the same things,” Juliar said. “They want to know the truth about what happened, they want an apology, and finally, they want to use their experience to make a difference, so others don’t have to deal with the same issue.”
MAPS collects patient stories and shares them with the industry. Hearing firsthand accounts of patient safety issues and how they could have been prevented is a powerful way to improve patient outcomes.
Heidi Holste, MAPS executive director, reinforced the impact of patient stories. “Patient safety is too important to fight over,” Holste said. “Our upcoming meeting with Chief Quality Officers is a perfect opportunity to share some of these stories to reinforce our need to work together to improve patient outcomes.”

MAPS Programs
Formed in 2000, MAPS brings consumers and healthcare providers together in many ways. First, they coordinate a patient and family network who meet monthly. In the wake of COVID-19, the group contributed to safety protocol practices, including visitor restriction guidelines.
Additionally, over the last few months MAPS held a virtual safety webinar series, “Safety at a Crossroads: Back to the Heart of Patient Safety.” The event featured over 17 speakers and regularly had as many as 100 attendees. Later this month, MAPS will host a meeting of Chief Quality Officers.
