As many of us wrap up a festive holiday season, millions of our friends, relatives and neighbors are in a dire situation. If you know someone with cancer, a trauma victim or someone with a chronic illness, you know someone who needs blood. While the United States faces its worst blood shortage in years, you can take part in the Caresfield blood drive to help!
January is Blood Donor Awareness Month. Therefore, we want to celebrate the millions of voluntary blood donors who make life-saving donations each year. Are you ready to contribute? If so, we emphatically encourage you to attend our Caresfield blood drive. It starts at 9 a.m. Friday, Jan. 15, at our Lakeville, Minnesota headquarters.

“No manifestation of this generosity of spirit is more expressive, and no gift more priceless in time of personal crisis, than the donation of one’s blood. The volunteer blood donor truly gives life itself.”
Proclamation No. 3952, Dec. 31, 1969
For Caresfield VP of Sales and Marketing Stefanie Bosshart, Ph.D., it is the first time she has been eligible to donate in years because of an autoimmune disorder.
“Knowing that millions of patients in the U.S. require whole blood for surgeries, treatments and infusions I was always disappointed that I was unable to donate due to my medical history,” Bosshart said. “This year I was thrilled to learn that the original guideline that prevented me from donating no longer applies. I am now eligible to donate! If you’ve been ineligible to donate before, I hope you will take another look at the guidelines to see if you can donate during this critical time of need.”
It is undeniably important to donate blood. Are you still not sure about making a donation? The University of Maryland Medical Center summarizes some of the top reasons people do not give blood. Whatever your hesitation, we urge you to step outside your comfort zone to help.
Red Cross: Blood Desperately Needed This Holiday Season
The Red Cross admits the situation is serious. The organization is indeed experiencing the worst blood shortage in over a decade. The dangerously low blood supply levels have forced some hospitals to defer patients from major surgery, including organ transplants. For that reason, your donation is desperately needed this holiday season. Please make plans to give now.

Blood Donor Awareness Month
President Richard Nixon signed Proclamation 3952, recognizing the first Blood Donor Month on Dec. 31, 1969. The proclamation claims, in part:
“No manifestation of this generosity of spirit is more expressive, and no gift more priceless in time of personal crisis, than the donation of one’s blood. The volunteer blood donor truly gives life itself.” Proclamation No. 3952, Dec. 31, 1969
According to the Community Blood Center, 4.5 million Americans will a need blood transfusion each year. Whereas 37 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood – less than 10 percent do annually. If you’ve never donated blood, or haven’t in a while, we’d love to see you. The Center has a list of 56 facts about giving blood and you can also visit National Today to learn more about Blood Donor Awareness Month.
