Labs Face Unique Challenges with Labels

Using the wrong labels can lead to mistakes. Think about the volume of samples your team processes every day – how often do you have a label error that forces you to discard a sample? Is your team spending valuable time affixing rubber bands and other workarounds to samples? In this article, we’ll take a look at the challenges your labels face in the lab.

Lab directors face a lot of pressures. Many departments in a typical care facility rely on laboratory functions. It’s crucial to make sure your medical laboratory scientists and technicians have the right tools to work efficiently. Hopefully your facility is already using barcode labeling to track specimens as they enter the lab.

You may be testing patient samples in-house to decide the best course of patient care. Or you could be freezing them and sending them out to a reference lab for more testing. Are your labels holding up to all the environmental hazards? Cryogenic freezing can be particularly challenging. We’ve found that using the wrong adhesive can cause labels to fall off. This leads to either staff workarounds or wasted samples. Save your team time and protect your samples with our specially-designed cryogenic labels.

Xylene Resistant Labels

The U.S. is one of the top producers of Xylene, a chemical widely used in histology laboratories. While the compound is helpful in making tissue transparent and as a cleaning agent, it can wreak havoc on labels. A small smudge could make a barcode unscannable, leading to misplaced or wasted samples. Our Xylene-resistant labels are still scannable and readable even after exposure.

This image shows how isopropyl alcohol can affect a label without an appropriate resistant coating. Xylene has a similar effect.

Blood Bank

If your lab conducts blood testing you know blood and blood products are regulated by the FDA. When is the last time you checked to ensure your patient information labels were compliant? Or that your secondary labels are in line with FDA Section 175.105? If it’s been a while, we have a helpful checklist on our blog:  Is Your Blood Bank Labeling Compliant?
